Farewell Melissa, our amazing Director of Operations!

WHEN DID YOU START WORKING AT THE HIVE?

I started at the HiVE in September 2014 as the General Manager.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE HIVE?

For me, the HiVE is all about the people. I have met such incredible people here and been so inspired by the work they are doing.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

My favourite part of the job was managing the Desk Bee Exchange Program. I got to meet the coolest people. They are often in the early stages of their projects or careers, or they have just taken a big leap and moved to Vancouver and are new to our city and even country. The team is always changing, but also always working together and being supportive of each other.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING YOUR TIME HERE?

So many things! I learned a lot about managing teams and projects. I also learned a lot about community building: make it easy to participate in, include options for all kinds of personalities and preferences, and offer food!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE HIVE AFTER ALL THE YEARS YOU HAVE WORKED HERE?

The HiVE is a community of people who are doing what they believe in. We eat together, work together, and change the world together.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS THE MOST?

The people! That’s why I’ll never be fully gone; once I’ve left the staff, expect me to have a community membership and still come by for Thirsty Thursday sometimes.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO LOOK FOR A NEW JOB?

After all these years of watching people living their passions in the HiVE, I finally figured out what I what to be when I grow up. I discovered audio description (also known as descriptive video and a lot of other names), which would allow me to combine my interest in accessibility with creativity and writing, and I decided that I want to be an audio description writer. I was lucky enough to get hired by a wonderful local audio description company – Descriptive Video Works – as a part-time project manager so I can use my existing skills to move into the industry, and then I hope to be able to start writing for them as well in the future.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE?

I am looking forward to getting involved with more aspects of the audio description industry. I’ve already done a weekend training in South Carolina and I’ve been volunteering for YouDescribe, having described over 270 minutes of YouTube videos for them. I’m really excited to do more training and practice and then start writing professionally.
